The Strathmore High School Spartans JV basketball team won the 3A zone tournament last weekend, capping off an impressive season with the biggest win of the year, besting George McDougall from Airdrie 80-71.

Head Coach Andy Miciak explained the zone tournament is the last one of the seasons, so ending on a strong note was a great feeling.

"It's amazing, we said after a tournament in December where we had lost a tough game that we had one goal for the season, and it was to win this zone banner. For that to come to fruition is just amazing and I'm so proud of the boys for all they put in to make that happen this year," he said.

The Spartans went into the tournament as the number one seed, so Miciak set the team's expectation to win. Getting to that point took a lot of hard work and resilience throughout the season, which he says was a huge reason they had the success they had.

"The boys just worked really hard and listened and improved constantly through practice and asking for help and tips and stuff like that. It was awesome to see these boys come together. We had great team chemistry and ultimately that's kind of what brought us to the number one seed and then we had good execution of the game plan in zones to help us bring home the banner."

The JV team is made up of grade 10s and 11s to develop them for the Sr. team in the following seasons. With the success the team had this year and the chemistry they forged as a team, Miciak expects the players to continue having success as they move on to the Sr. team.
