Snow blanketed most of Strathmore this morning, turning fields and front lawns that were normally brown and green at the start of April to white-capped mid-month.

According to Terri Lang Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, there’s a bit of a yoyo effect that comes into play for the weather in the Prairies at this time of year.

“Because we are still in that battle zone with the warmer air to the south and the colder air to the north we know that these colder outbreaks can occur,” she said. She noted that the weather could last well into May.

For the Easter long-weekend people can expect the cooler conditions to continue with highs struggling to get over the freezing mark.

This roller coaster type weather is very common for spring on the prairies, she explained.

“Spring is the time where there is so much up and down.”

She said some of the most volatile weather takes place in the spring and the fall and it also a time where the region sees the most snowfall.

Today there’s a high of – 4C in Strathmore with light snow ending this morning. Cloudy skies and some snow are expected tonight with a low of -9 C, and tomorrow morning there’s a chance for a few flurries with a high of – 4 C.
