The Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County has drafted a joint letter to be sent to the CMRB requesting a letter of support for their removal from the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board.

The motion to send the letter was passed by Strathmore town council on Wednesday night.

In the past, both the town and county have requested removal from the CMRB. The town's June 2021 request is currently being considered by the Minister of Municipal Affairs

The CMRB is a provincially mandated growth management board in the Calgary region. The Calgary Metropolitan Region (CMR) consists of the 10 member municipalities mandated to develop a long-term plan for managed and sustainable growth.

Because of Strathmore’s distance from Calgary, the previous town council advocated for Strathmore to be removed from the board.

According to the town, there are significant resources required in terms of administration to be an ongoing member of the CMRB and, if Strathmore remains a member, this will need to be addressed. In addition, if Strathmore remains a member it will be subject to the Growth Management Plan and other relevant documents approved by the board.
