It's been an incredibly hot summer, and this weekend could be seeing historic heat levels in Strathmore.

Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada Samantha Mauti explained we could be approaching temperatures we haven't seen in 80-100 years. She listed the historic highs and what we're expecting this week, being:

  July 21 July 22 July 23 July 24
2023 forecasted highs 34°C 35°C 33°C 34°C
Historic highs 35°C (1946) 34.4°C (1936) 33.3°C (1923) 32.8°C (1928)

This recent potentially historic heat wave has been one of many heat waves we've experienced this summer, and Mauti expects us to have even more heat warnings as we head into August.

"It's looking like early August we might get into some higher 20s, possibly low 30s at the beginning of August. The heat will probably continue, our seasonal forecast or our monthly forecast for August is showing signals of being warmer than normal," she said.

However, in between heat waves we may get a bit of a break, as Mauti said next week near the end of July it's possible we cool down a bit. It won't be much, as we would still be in the mid to high 20s, but it wouldn't be approaching the record-breaking heat we're seeing now.

If you need to beat the heat, the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre is open as a cooling station as long as the heat warning is in place.
