Get ready to mark your calendar. If all goes well, the annual Battle of the Badges charity hockey game will take place later this year. The organizing committee, of the game that is held between local EMS, Police, and Firefighters have been meeting to put on the game, which has not been held for over two years.

Firefighter Erica Barnson, one of the organizers of the game says they’re planning the game but there isn’t an official date set yet.

“The last game was in 2019. At this point, we are still working on planning one for this year. We just don't have a time chosen,” she said.

“There's still quite a bit of planning that needs to be done, so we're at the unknown stage,” she said.

She explained the format of the game, “It'll be Fire versus RCMP with a little bit of EMS sprinkled on both sides as far as players go. What our goal is to choose a local charity to donate the proceeds of the game to,” she said.

“Our chosen charity, which was a couple of years ago before COVID happened, was School Fuel. We, unfortunately, had to cancel that game, so our plan moving forward is to again involve School Fuel and hopefully this time we won't have to cancel the game,” she said.

She explained that at the game spectators can donate any amount they wish.

“Essentially the entry fee is whatever you feel you're able to donate, there's no set fee. Viewers can come in and if they feel like donating 25 cents or $5 whatever they feel they're capable of, then, by all means, come on down and enjoy the game,” said Barnson.

She noted that organizers typically reach out to the local business community for sponsorships for the game. The game usually also features a silent auction as well.
