Strong winds have been walloping Strathmore, but according to Environment Canada that may be easing by the end of the week, and we should be looking forward to more spring-like weather.

Strathmore and the surrounding area are currently under a wind warning.

“We do have a slow-moving low-pressure system that's in the area and that's what's bringing the severe wind gusts to parts of southern Alberta, including Strathmore," said Jesse Wagar a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

"The winds really started to pick up yesterday afternoon. They're continuing to gust in that 70 to 90 kilometer an hour range today (Apr. 5),” she said.

Wagar says the wind should start to weaken later this afternoon and calm down into the overnight hours.

“We generally try to issue those warnings several hours in advance of when the winds are supposed to pick up, so that's when we really start to encourage protective actions to be taken so that that can be done before the strong winds really start and it starts to get dangerous,” Wagar added.

She says the weather agency encourages residents to tie down objects before the gusts hit and adjust their driving accordingly.

“Spring in Alberta is so variable. You can almost be every type of weather packed into a month or two of our spring. So we do tend to see stronger winds and stronger systems that start to come through beginning around this time of year,” said Wagar. “We would just suggest that you're up to date with the weather and making sure that you have the latest way to receive the latest alerts in case another wind event decides to move through the area.”

Wagar revealed that temperatures will be warming up this week, especially on Friday when the projected high is near the 20 C mark.

“Something to look forward to after the winds calm down. Unfortunately, on the other side of it, there is a cool down coming this weekend and we are expecting a bit of a rain/snow mix at times early in the weekend,” she said.
