March 22 marked World Water Day, which was celebrated by the Town of Strathmore on their social media.

According to the town, Strathmore has over 300 fire hydrants within the town limits that help provide access to bulk water in case of an emergency.

EPCOR delivers water to the community of Strathmore. Strathmore currently receives drinking water from the City of Calgary by the East Calgary Regional Water Line.

Right now there are no interruptions to water, energy or drainage services related to COVID-19, but some non-essential services have been curtailed in order to protect the health of EPCOR employees and customers.

The theme of the day this year is ‘Water and Climate Change.’

World Water Day annually is a day of action to recognize the importance of safe and clean water, the need for federal government protections, and the damage pollution can do to water.

According to The Council of Canadians, there are 110 drinking water advisories in First Nations communities, and some communities in Canada have lived under boil water advisories for almost 20 years.

Good handwashing hygiene is also part of the United Nations’ message on World Water Day.

According to the UN, hand hygiene is essential to containing the spread of COVID-19, as well as other infectious diseases. On this World Water Day, and any other day, remember to wash your hands regularly with water and soap or with an alcohol-based hand gel. See UNICEF's guidelines on handwashing and the UN Water's fast facts on handwashing/ hand hygiene.
