You don’t have to rush out and worry about registering your car this month if your renewal is up.

That’s because the Government of Alberta has ensured there is an extension until May 15.

Vice President of Gold Key Insurance in Strathmore Julia Marshall explains, “We are open. Service Alberta plans on remaining open.”

She says as far as the extension goes, anyone who has to renew after March 17 for example, if your birthday is on March 18, and in 2020 your license expires, you have until May 15 to come in and renew.

The same rules apply for the renewal of your license plate.

“If your last name lands in March and you have to renew by March 31st, you’re going to be OK until May 15,” she said.

“People don’t need to rush in and renew their plate if it’s a March renewal,” she said.

This rule applies to private passenger and non-commercial vehicles in Alberta.

In terms of commercial vehicles, if truck drivers travel outside of Alberta, this rule does not apply to them. Marshall noted that those individuals will need to ensure their renewal is up to date.

In terms of the physical office, Marshall explained that the office remains open here in Strathmore.

“Our office is open there is no current Service Alberta plans on shutting registries down. We will remain open. We are respecting the social distancing as far as staffing goes,” she said.

She explained that staff at Gold Key Insurance are following the advice of Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, in that staff are practicing frequent hand-washing and hand sanitizer is available for clients.

Staff are cleaning touch-surfaces such as work areas like wickets in between clients numerous times per day, and are wearing protective gloves and asking clients simple questions when they arrive in order to respect the health and wellness of staff.
