In a Special Council Meeting on March 15, the Town of Strathmore requested an apology from Wheatland County due to a comment made by one of their councillors.

Last week, in a Wheatland County Special Council Meeting on March 12, Councillor Tom Ikert made a statement about the Town of Strathmore’s financial stability and questioned their ability to support the Wheatland Housing Management Body’s (WHB) proposed development of a 120-unit lodge.

The statement made by Councillor Ikert is as follows: “The board believes that they can requisition us $1.6 million? Does the board understand that that number will cripple the Town of Strathmore? I mean, it does not do us any good, but it will cripple the Town of Strathmore.”

The Town of Strathmore is asking that Wheatland County retract the statement and publicly apologize in the “interest of collaboration and partnership between the communities.”

“This statement is fallacious and damaging to both the Town of Strathmore’s reputation and the potential development of the 120-unit lodge, provided certain parameters are met,” the Town of Strathmore said in a letter sent to Wheatland County.

The Town of Strathmore also requested to attend a meeting with Wheatland County Council, Minister Nixon, and Minister McIver regarding the proposed development of the 120-unit Wheatland Lodge.

During the March 12 County meeting, Wheatland County Council passed a resolution and requested a meeting with the two ministers.

“As you are aware, both the Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County passed similar motions supporting the proposed Wheatland Housing Management Body’s proposed 120-unit lodge, provided certain parameters are met. In the interest of collaboration and continuing our municipalities’ partnership over this initiative, the Town would like to request that Mayor Fule and the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, Kevin Scoble, attend this meeting,” the Town of Strathmore said.

The Town of Strathmore is calling for collaboration with the county as the proposed lodge will benefit many residents in both communities.
