There are only a few weeks to go before the community will come together to mark Remembrance Day. One of the iconic symbols of local veterans and the Royal Canadian Legion in Strathmore is the poppy.

The Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10 Poppy Campaign will kick off this week, and run until November 11.

Bruce Westgard, Strathmore Legion President explains that donations to the poppy campaign go towards supporting veterans.

“If they're having trouble moving around, we build ramps so they can get their scooter or wheelchair up, or we help with any medical help that they need, like getting into Calgary. It's all for veterans,” he said.

Westgard says that poppy boxes will go out into the community after October 29th.

He says businesses or schools can request poppy boxes. He revealed most of the schools have received deliveries of poppy boxes, but the campaign will not begin until Friday.

According to the Royal Canadian Legion, the Poppy Campaign kicks off on the last Friday of October.

Canadians wear a poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s veterans and to remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.
