Jason Kenney called plans for an increase for the federal carbon tax a bad April fools day joke.

Today he held a news conference to speak about how inflation and the carbon tax is hurting Canadian taxpayers.

He told the Trudeau Liberal-NDP government to stop picking the pockets of Albertan taxpayers.

Kenney spoke of the growing increase in costs of gas, food, and housing.

“These aren't optional expenses or luxuries that folks can do without. These are basic costs that people have when they live, work and raise their families in this cold northern country. Trudeau's carbon tax hike is another body blow to Albertans taking money right out of our pockets and send it to Ottawa when we can least afford it,” he said.

A motion will be made in the Legislature asking the Federal government to halt the increase of the federal carbon tax, which is scheduled for April 1 given that the country is facing some of the highest inflation in about 30 years.

“The federal government tax hikes and huge deficits have driven up inflation for years. The problem's been getting worse. We've already seen prices explode on grocery shelves caused by rampant inflation on food and other basic necessities,” said the Premier.

“Grocery stores have been facing higher and higher costs on the things they need to get food on their shelves. In fact, food costs have increased by 18% since the carbon tax was introduced here in Alberta in 2015.”

“And the April 1st carbon tax increase will make that bad situation even worse for working families. It just doesn't make sense right now, as I say, inflation is at the highest point in three decades, and it's only going to hurt families and make life even more expensive to raise it further,” said Kenney.

In Alberta, the provincial government has plans to suspend the provincial gas tax on April 1, there will also be an energy rebate of $150 on electricity bills.

Kenney also says the province will be capping the price of gas for home heating at $6.50 per GJ.
