Alberta’s Education Minister, Adriana LaGrange, announced this afternoon talking about when certain subjects will receive their respective different curriculums. Starting in September 2022, kindergarten to grade three will see some changes.

“We will implement new mathematics, English language arts, and literature curriculum for students in kindergarten to grade three in September. This will help our younger students who are in the critical early stages of their development, strengthening their numeracy and literacy skills.”

The new curriculum for grades four to six in Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Literature will be implemented the following school year starting in September of 2023.

“In addition, new physical education and wellness curriculum will be implemented across all K to grade six when the school year begins in September of 2022.”

LaGrange went on to say this will support students learning how to build resiliency and manage their health, mental health and well-being life skills, which are more important now than ever.

“Throughout the curriculum renewal process, I've heard calls to delay implementation entirely. However, this would not be in the best interest of our students. The foundations for [a] rewarding career and bright future begin early in life. Alberta's education system is a critical starting point.”

LaGrange says they are fulfilling their obligation to update Alberta's very outdated curriculum while also ensuring that students and teachers are set up for success.

The measured strategy the province is announcing today is based on the Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group's valuable insight and expert advice.

“This advisory group includes superintendents, curriculum experts, classroom teachers, an elementary principal, representatives from the Alberta School Boards Association, and the College of Alberta school superintendents.”

LaGrange finished off by saying curriculum for K to six English Language Arts and Literature, mathematics and physical education and wellness will be released in April, giving teachers and school authorities time to prepare for the 20 to 23 school year.
