Albertans will now need to provide proof of two COVID-19 vaccine doses to access many restaurants, movies, sporting events, and other businesses provincewide, and that includes recreation facilities in Strathmore.

“As per Alberta health measures that have been put in the Town, Strathmore is following the restriction exemption program. That requires people aged 18 and above, whether it's participating in sports or whether they're as a spectator, they must show a valid Alberta double vaccine record,” explained the manager of recreation and culture for the Town of Strathmore, Mark Pretzlaff.

Previously, a single vaccine dose was sufficient to enter into these facilities, but as of October 25, two doses are required. The second dose must have been administered for at least 14 days before a person is considered fully vaccinated.

Those who are not fully vaccinated can still choose to provide a privately paid negative COVID-19 test from within the previous 72 hours or valid proof of medical exemption.

This only applies to those above the age of 18. Those between the ages of 12-18 have different restrictions Pretzlaff continued.

“If they are participating in an activity, they're not required to come and show any of those things that I just mentioned. But if they're a spectator, they're still required to comply with the restriction exemption program.”

He explained that if a brother above the age of 12 was going to watch a younger brother play, he would still need at least 2 doses or a negative test to watch.

“Those who are 12 and under are exempt no matter what, whether spectators or participants,” he continued. “The biggest change that's coming forth, will actually happen in about 2 weeks. The Alberta vaccine records will only accept the QR code version of proof of vaccine.”

Currently, a vaccine card showing the date of vaccine is sufficient, but the government will be switching to a QR code system that is harder to replicate.

“Effective November 15, we will be mandated to comply with the QR code system. The important thing to know is that if you aren't able to access it on a smartphone or able to print it off, Registries across the province can print it off for you.”
