Dawn-Marie Hunter’s grade 3 class and their student teacher, Ella Badiou, have created a beautiful way to show kindness throughout the community by decorating kindness rocks.

The rocks are hand-painted with messages of kindness written across each rock. Badiou explained that this was a really unique way of combining science with empathy.

“In Grade 3, the students actually learn about rocks and minerals, and the school’s theme this month is cultivating positive self-talk. My partner teacher and I decided that it might be a really awesome idea to incorporate our school's monthly theme with our science units.”

She said that each of the students thought of their own kind of messages to put on the rocks and with a little paint glitter and glue, the students created rocks that will brighten anyone's day.

“The rocks were just a way for students to really understand that positive self-talk is super important and those kinds of messages can help brighten somebody else's day.”

Badiou explained that she hopes to have the students spread the rocks around the community to help brighten other people’s day. She continued to explain that her students really grasped the idea of the rocks after painting them.

“We actually had a little sharing circle happen outside because the weather was so awesome and we talked about if somebody had come across your rock, how would that make them feel and their responses were just really nice to hear.”

Keep your eye out for the colourful rocks that can be found around Strathmore’s pathways and streets in the coming weeks!
