The Wheatland and Area Hospice Society is hosting its sixth annual Hike for Hospice and newly added fire truck pull on May 7.

The Hike for Hospice is an annual event that is always held in May during National Palliative Care week, and this is one of many hikes held throughout the country.

Chair for the Wheatland and Area Hospice Society Dr. Joni McNeely says last year’s Hike for Hospice was a huge success and they raised $36 000.

“It was wonderful weather. People enjoyed the time that was spent with their families and friends as well as being able to get out and hike.”

Back again for another year, they will have face painting, free popcorn from local realtors, and donuts and coffee will be supplied by Rocky’s Bakery. The Wheatland Whirlers are also set to perform and then on top of that the newly added fire truck pull will also happen. Teams of eight to ten people will work together with help from the Strathmore Fire Department to pull the trucks about 100 feet. It will be a timed event with a trophy at the end of it. The fire truck pull will start at 10:00 a.m. which will be prior to the hike that will start at noon.

“I’ve heard of some sports teams getting involved and there was some talk about some nurses forming a team as well.”

The goal this year is to raise $25 000 but Dr. McNeely is hoping that they exceed that this year. “Hopefully we will be able to get close to the $36,000 and maybe even exceed that as well.”

The pull with not be happing at the Fire Department in town as it will be right beside the farmers market pavilion just beside where everyone gathers for the hike, which is at the Amphitheatre at Kinsmen Park.

“We're hoping that people will see the fire truck. They'll come down, check it out. They'll be able to mix and mingle prior, taking in some of the entertainment and maybe make a donation or two. And then if they'd like, they could continue the hike, which starts at 12:30.”

To donate or participate in the Hike you can visit the Hospice Society's website, where you can register as either a hiker, individual, or as a team to raise funds. There are also individual pledge sheets that can be picked up at Grey’s Limited or Strathmore Value Drug Mart.

“We are just one step closer to having a hospice in our community.”
