Job fairs can be a great way to meet a bunch of employers who are actively hiring.

It allows those looking for jobs to break through digital barriers and form a face-to-face connection with an employer.

Heidi Lane, a workforce advisor with Prospect Human Services, discussed some benefits of attending job fairs.

“With some potential employers, it gives you a chance to put your best foot forward and explain maybe why you have a gap in your resume, and it gives you a chance to get a good picture of what an employer or an opportunity might look like,” Lane said.

Some job seekers may be discouraged from attending job fairs if they have a gap in their resume, are a new Canadian, or are a younger person with little to no work experience.

But Lane says not to worry, as they have staff at job fairs who can help coach and guide people through the job-hunting experience.

Lane discussed some things you can do to make yourself memorable at a job fair and stand out among other candidates.

“Bring several hard copies of your resume and a positive attitude. Have a willingness to chat with employers and put your best foot forward.”

Lane suggests that if you want an employment opportunity that is good for you and want someone to see you for who you are, then just be yourself.

“There's no good in pretending to be a certain way and hoping to get an opportunity that's not actually a match for you.”

Another benefit of job fairs, Lane says, is that you get to practice among dozens of diverse employers.

“Go from booth to booth and talk to employers about jobs that you're not super interested in and save the one you really want for a little later once you work off some nerves.”

On Wednesday, February 28, there will be a job fair happening in Strathmore.

The job fair will take place at the Travelodge by Wyndham Strathmore (350 Ridge Road) from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Over 25 diverse employers will be there looking for potential employees.

Lane says most of those looking to hire will be local to Strathmore, with a heavy focus on jobs in the construction industry, as well as the Fire Department, Landscape Plus, Magnum Services, Remuda Building LTD, and more.
