Alberta could soon see the end of some public health measures.

During Tuesday’s (Feb.1) COVID-19 update, Premier Jason Kenney said he believes public health measures will be eased sometime in February, including lifting the Restrictions Exemption Program (REP).

Kenney explained the province is seeing trends “move in the right direction” in terms of intensive care numbers, although the province is still seeing some increases in non-ICU patients.

“As frustrated as everybody is with the two years of COVID in our lives affecting so much, we need to continue to be careful,” said Kenney.

“We are not out of the woods yet; I implore Albertans to continue to be mindful of this, of the pressure on our healthcare system.”

Currently, there are 1,585 people in hospital with COVID-19, including 109 in intensive care.

There are 35,322 known active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta; 1,980 lab-confirmed cases were reported on Tuesday.

Thirteen new deaths were reported, bringing the total to 3,579 since the start of the pandemic.

Kenney says that once we see a sustained reduction in the burden on the healthcare system, we can discuss easing healthcare measures.
