Terri McKinnon has received the BravoZulu Recognition Award from the Canadian Navy.

The award comes from McKinnon's success in developing the Ship to Shore program with Canadian school kids. The program is designed to grow engagement with the Navy by building relationships between students and the sailors.

"We developed a program where we could have interactive-based learning experiences for students. We wanted to visit the classroom and drew upon the expertise of the Navel Reserve unit in Calgary," said McKinnon.

The program focuses on the different ranks between senior officers and petty officers and the significance of a uniform.

"A uniform does tell a full story. The whole story of a sailor and that is why they are so proud to wear it."

McKinnon loves that students got to ask the questions and sailors answered them. Ultimately, the students drove what they learned.

"It was very nice to get recognized by the Vice Admiral as the driving force behind the program. For them to say 'Thank you Terri' means a lot. I feel so humbled and honored to have been given such an award."

The program was a passion project for McKinnon.

"The expertise, the technology, the teamwork, and training that is put into becoming a sailor is phenomenal. I wanted to share that will everyone."

A ceremony was held at the Military Museum in Calgary for Mckinnon to receive her award.

"We were in the navel gallery of the museum, so it was a pretty authentic place to host a BravaZulu ceremony."
