The Strathmore Overnight Shelter has an exciting event coming up that will be one of their biggest fundraisers of the year.

The March for Shelter will be happening this month at Kinsmen Park on March 20th. Carrilyn Fisk Board member and Fundraising Coordinator explained that they are hoping to break records with the amounts that they raise.

“So, we've been doing it for about 6 years and the most that we've had our has probably been around 50 to 60 people out. In a normal successful year, we raised $8,000 and so in total over the six years, we probably raised around $50,000.”

“This year, we would like to double our most successful year. So, we're trying for $15,000. We are hoping to get 100 or more people out this year.”

The Strathmore Overnight Shelter has helped hundreds of people get back on their feet, and was a staple for many during the pandemic.

“Basically, the service that we provide as an overnight shelter is we just take care of people who find themselves temporarily homeless or dealing with long-term homeless."

While they have received grant funding from the government for COVID-19 support, they are still hoping to raise as much as they can so they can keep helping those in the community who need it.

“Well, our immediate goal is always just to keep the doors open. We find the costs, especially this year, have gone up so much with inflation, with just our utilities and paying for food.”
