The Alberta government has made some changes to its Graduated Driver's Licensing (GDL) program.
Starting Saturday (Apr. 1), eligible drivers in the GDL program will be able to save over $150 by not taking an advanced road test to get their full Class 5 or Class 6 driver's license.
“This is a good common-sense approach that cuts red tape. Albertans have told us this was red tape - we listened and are addressing it. This change will also help make driver’s licenses more affordable for Albertans,” said Dale Nally, minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.
Those needing to exit the program can go to a registry office to confirm if they're eligible. If they are, the registry will exchange the GDL license for a non-GDL license free of charge.
On June 25, the provincial government will implement technology that automatically exits the remaining eligible drivers.
To be eligible, you must be 18 years of age, have completed your 24 months of probationary driving, and you must be suspension and demerit-free for the last year.
Police noticed that in the last five years, 65 per cent of drivers and 99 per cent of motorcyclists had not taken their advanced road test.
