On March 17, the public are invited to Kinsmen park in downtown Strathmore for the unveiling of a memorial for Kakato’si Kristian Ayoungman.

Ayoungman’s murder has had a profound impact on the residents of Strathmore and Siksika Nation.

Astokomii Smith, Indigenous Liaison for the Town of Strathmore speaks about the memorial which is located just steps away from the municipal office.

“The significance is to build bridges, build relationships and to learn about First Nations and their culture,” she said.

“Donna McCallum, our operations manager, worked closely with Melody Ayoungman on the memorial stone, the largest pillar is to represent Kristian, who is a pillar of change in our community,” she said.

Guest speakers at the event will include Strathmore Mayor Pat Fule, Siksika Nation Chief Ouray Crowfoot, Town councillors Denise Peterson and Richard Wegener (on behalf of the Wheatland Kings Junior B Hockey Club), Chestermere-Strathmore MLA Leela Sharon Aheer, Town of Strathmore Indigenous Liaison Astokomii Smith and filmmaker Holly Fortier.

“We hope that as many people can come to support the Ayoungman family,” said Smith. She noted that the town is currently monitoring Alberta public health guidelines. But as the event will be held outdoors, there will be ample space for individuals to spread out.

About having the memorial in Kinsmen Park, which is a central location within the town Smith said, “I think it's important to have this memorial in Kinsman Park for everyone to recognize and reflect because unfortunately, it is a part of our history, but we must all acknowledge our path to move forward.”

“For those who have been touched by the love of Kristian, we all know he was a respectable role model to his community and elsewhere. He didn't deserve this and no other person does. We hope that people will start looking at the true history of First Nations.”

On March 17, the ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place at the Kinsmen Park amphitheatre. Participants are asked to wear green to honour Ayoungman. The event will also include a screening of the documentary called “Ayoungman” created by Two Canoes Film Company..
