Siksika Nation has broken ground and construction is underway on the new Crowfoot Public Safety Building on the eastern side of the reserve.

The building will be a safe haven for all members of Siksika, regardless of where they live on the Nation. This building will house the Nation’s Peace Officers and Security programs. It is also designed to bring a full-time security presence to a part of  Siksika Nation that does not have adequate policing or protection.

In the future, it is anticipated that the Siksika Nation Police Force will eventually take up residence in this building and establish an even stronger presence of public safety in the area.

Siksika Nation Councilor Samuel Crowfoot explains that there is a need for a public safety building as some of the nation's members are more spread out than others.

"We want to make sure that the only people within the Gleichen area aren't the only ones who have law enforcement close by. So, this satellite police station is meant to bring a 24-hour presence to that part of public safety to that part of the reserve."

A sod-turning ceremony happened on June 9 to signify the acknowledgment and commencement of the project. However, the project has already been underway for some time.

"It is really about just bringing full-time public safety presence to that part of the reserve. We hope that everybody in the area, no matter what benefits from the presence of law enforcement in that area."

Siksika has partnered with MODUS, of Crossfield Alberta in the building of the project.

In a statement from the Office of Chief and Council Government of Siksika Nation states that as they move toward protecting the nation, they are proud to partner with MODUS, a construction manufacturer that is laser-focused on providing innovative solutions for the most intricate projects and has experience working with First Nations across Canada in helping them build and strengthen their communities.

They are also proud to partner with Werkz Inc. who have been instrumental in public safety initiatives and who have played an instrumental role in this project.

Doors to the Crowfoot Public Safety Building are expected to open in October of this year.
