The 2023 North American Indigenous Games have started this week in Halifax, Nova Scotia and with that, some local athletes from Strathmore and Siksika Nation have made the trip to play in the games.  

18-year-old Carter Yellow Horn from Strathmore will be playing on the Basketball 19U Male team and his goal for the games is to come home with a medal and to make the community of Strathmore proud of what he is representing. He says his role model is his father Shay Yellow Horn, and he plays for his brother Channer Yellow Horn, who he tragically lost earlier this year.

15-year-old Karson Dale Maguire plays on the U19 male softball league. Maguire's goals for himself in the Indigenous games is to enjoy himself, play great, and to have fun. 

18-year-old Ethan Leslie Isaiah Running Rabbit will be playing on the U19 male box lacrosse team. Running Rabbit has been playing in the sport for 8 years. He has also played with the Calgary Chill and Strathmore Venom. 

16-year-old Selena Maguire will be playing for the Basketball 19U Female team and her goal for the games are to meet new friends and play with great passion with her team. She also hopes to gain more experience and be a team leader.

12-year-old Lanayson McHugh will be playing on the Basketball 14U Male team. His role model is his father Landon McHugh and in his free time he like to draw and to watch the Calgary Surge basketball home games.

The North American Indigenous games will run until July 23.
