Multiple issues for a Strathmore doctor has led to a six-month suspension.

Dr. Altaf Khumree entered into a sexual relationship with a patient and failed to disclose that to the College of Physicians and Surgeons, in addition, Khumree prescribed himself medication.

Khumree was ordered to complete education as stated in the ruling that includes "interactions of race, culture, medical practice and trauma-informed care, and the impact of personality types on effective interpersonal communications."

Khumree has also been ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and 50 per cent of the costs of the investigation and hearing that was held.  Those costs have not been totalled to date.

As stated in the decision released on Thursday Khumree was involved in an inappropriate personal relationship with a patient which included living together.  This relationship was stated to have taken place between June 2011 to December 2014.  In addition during that time, the release said he self-prescribed drugs a total of nine times between February 2012 and April 2015 including codeine, zopiclone, and zolpidem.

During that time span, he also sought treatment in 2015 for an alcohol dependency and was charged with impaired driving in 2014 and convicted in 2015, both of which were not disclosed to the college until 2016.

Khumree must serve three of the six-month suspension and the remaining three months will be held in abeyance pending compliance with the orders.
