Two people were able to escape from an early morning fire in Hillview this weekend.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, people in the neighbourhood of Hillview woke to a blazing house fire.

Strathmore Fire Department responded to the scene and found a structure fully engulfed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation according to Strathmore Fire Department Chief David Sturgeon

The fire occurred on Friday night just after midnight.  “There were two residents that were able to evacuate safely to the neighbours.” explained the fire chief. The entire structure including the roof was on fire.

Local firefighters were not able to enter the structure. They fought the fire for about four hours before it was contained.

Sturgeon said, “The focus was obviously to save the neighbors properties, so we put a bunch of water down the sides of the house and then obviously tried to extinguish what we could, but being that it was in the roof structure, it just kept going for quite some time.”

There was minimal damage to the neighbouring homes, like damage to the vinyl siding.

During the operation, the fire chief remarked that there were many community members at the scene. The number of vehicles parked in the area became difficult for firefighters.

"It was a challenge gaining access to the site and when we have multiple trucks coming in, we need quite a bit of room to do our work,” he said.

The chief said he understands members of the community being at the scene, but he asked for the public to be aware that the responding fire vehicles also require space to operate.
