You read that headline correctly, and this isn't satire: Strathmore will be receiving its own Monopoly Board!

Outset Media has partnered with Walmart Canada to bring "Strathmore-opoly" to our community. Public Relations Coordinator with Outset media Jared Clarkson said we can expect to see this at our local Walmart very soon, if not right now. It will also be available online, but exclusive to Walmart.

Strathmore Monopoly

Clarkson explained this isn't a new concept, and Outset media has brought over 200 Canadian cities to Monopoly over the last three years. However, they found that smaller communities have embraced games like this a lot more, so they've been working to add smaller communities as much as possible to give people another way to celebrate their towns and cities.

Regarding the board itself, you can expect to see a lot of Strathmore's most popular spots, but it isn't organized like a typical Monopoly board.

"We don't organize the board in terms of what we feel would necessarily be the most expensive part of the board like a typical monopoly board. We didn't want to make it seem like we were playing favorites as to if a property is the most expensive vs the least expensive. Typically we try to group it. You'll see that malls are grouped together, schools are grouped together, parks are grouped together," he said.

Clarkson added that creating a variety of Strathmore's locations was a big priority.

"We also try and create as good a mix of different parts of the city, obviously we aren't able to include everything, but we want to design the board in a way that if someone from Strathmore was to be playing it, there would be something on the board for everyone, no matter what their favorite part of the city is."

While the board itself includes Strathmore favorites like the Strathmore Stampede, Joyland Theatre and Country Lane Mall, the pieces themselves are generic. Clarkson explained this was done to keep the game affordable and accessible to as many people as possible.

He added these boards typically sell for around $28-32, depending on location. If you're interested, check out our local Walmart to start playing our very own Monopoly board!
