It’s an exciting time for soccer fans in Strathmore right now. There’s an exciting new partnership with Cavalry FC, and now Canada has made it all the way into the World Cup.

We spoke with Alex Cunningham, President of Strathmore Soccer Association about what it means to see the team make it all the way into the greatest soccer event in the world.

“It's been 36 years since Canada made the World Cup and a lot of us listening right now haven't been alive that long. That's great news for us,” he said.

“I've been following Canada’s World soccer adventure for a long time. But when they beat Mexico in Edmonton a couple of weeks ago, that was really exciting,” he said.

Most recently, Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 on the weekend in order to qualify for the World Cup.

When asked how he thinks this win affects soccer fans and kids in the area, for them to have a hero to look up to, Cunningham said, “I think a lot of us just like to cheer and cheering for your home country is always a lot of fun. So having them be successful in a world tournament like this and qualifying for the World Tournament is extremely exciting for a lot of people. Everyone likes to cheer for something, so let's keep cheering and see if we can make a few wins at the World Cup! That'd be nice to see.”

Canada will play Panama tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers. Canada is also currently at the top of the standings in front of the USA and Mexico.
