A special award is paying tribute to two well-known members of Wheatland County.

The John and Ann Scheer Memorial Award is now accepting applicants.

The award will recognize a graduating Grade 12 student from a Wheatland County high school who is planning to pursue a post-secondary education.

Jill Aschenbrenner, daughter of John and Ann Scheer, explained their impact on the community.

"They both valued education. They realized that our future is in the hands of our youth. They wanted to encourage people to pursue their interests and do something that allows them to work and give back to their community."

The award will have $1000 applied directly to a graduate's tuition.

Applicants must:

  • Be graduating Grade 12 this year from a Wheatland County high school (Strathmore High School, Holy Cross Collegiate, Strathmore Storefront School, Golden Hills Learning Academy, or Wheatland Crossing School).
  • Be enrolled in their first year of a certificate, diploma, or degree program in any field of study at a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Demonstrate community involvement through volunteerism and personal perseverance.

"We want students to just convey their story to us. This is the launching point for the rest of your life. There are so many options out there, there are so many, and there are great careers. You don't need a university degree. You could get a diploma certificate, whatever. Get some education and Go out and do the best you can," added Aschenbrenner.

The application deadline is June 1.
