After a long summer of construction, Westridge Road is open for vehicular traffic once again.

Marketing coordinator for the Town of Strathmore, Scott Garnett explained that the newly added lanes will be a benefit to those travelling through town.

“A loading zone lane for large trucks was added to the roadway to assist with deliveries and for patrons using the restaurants and other businesses located along West Ridge. This loading zone will have a 30-minute time limit attached to it,” he explained.

There is still some more work to be done on the road which will continue in 2022. Still to be constructed is a sidewalk, crosswalk, landscaping, and a pathway that will connect to Highway 817.

“The Westridge Road Rehabilitation and Beautification project was always scheduled to be constructed over a two-year period with a budget of approximately $3.1 million,” Garnett continued. “The most extensive work being the replacement of the sanitary main and upgrading of the water main and roadway was completed this year.”

There were some unexpected delays that caused the project to be set back a bit.

“In working with any older infrastructure, there are always surprises to be found once a shovel has been put in the ground.”

“Unfortunately, old records are not always exact, and in the case of Westridge Road, this was no exception.  We encountered an old abandoned stormwater system. Contamination, rock shelves, and other unknowns causing delays to the set construction schedule while still being able to maintain the overall project budget.”

The road is now open for the foreseeable future until the Town of Strathmore continues the rest of the updates next year.
