We are currently under an extreme cold warning, as today could get as low as -44°C with wind chill. Tomorrow is looking similar, with -44°C with wind chill forecasted again, before seeing a low of -31°C on Wednesday. Because of this, the Town of Strathmore is opening the municipal building as a warming centre for anyone who needs to get in from the cold.
Council Chambers within the Strathmore Municipal Building on 1 Parklane Drive will be open to the public from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Bathrooms and water fountains are available on site.
"Avoid unnecessary travel or exposure outdoors. Watch for signs of frost bite or hypothermia," a Town of Strathmore automated message said.
Signs of frostbite include, but aren't limited to:
- Cold, prickling feeling on the skin
- Numbness
- Skin that looks red, white, bluish white, grayish-yellow, purplish, brown, or ashen. This depends on severity of the condition and what your normal skin color is.
- Muscle and Joint stiffness.
As for hypothermia, you should be on the lookout for:
- Shivering
- Exhaustion, drowsiness, clumsiness
- Memory loss
- Slurred speech
By Christmas Eve we could be seeing much warmer temperatures, as a high of -2°C is forecasted. For now though, make sure you stay warm and avoid going outside if possible.
