It was a big day for the Strathmore community on Saturday, December 18.

The Strathmore Fire Department and Gems for Gems held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the recent installation of a safe surrender site.

A safe surrender site allows mothers to abandon their child safely and with full anonymity. This project was started 4 years ago when an infant was found frozen in a dumpster on Christmas Eve in Calgary.

After hearing news of this, Strathmore Fire Department Captian Eric Alexander, began researching solutions to prevent an incident like this happening again.

He partnered with Calgary charity Gems for Gems, and after 4 years, this life saving device has been installed in Strathmore.

More about the safe surrender site can be found below.
