Thanksgiving long weekend is coming up, which for many is a weekend full of family traditions, festivities, and a big dinner. If one of your traditions is an outdoor activity, I have great news for you.

Kyle Fougere with Environment Canada explains we have a beautiful weekend coming up, and this year is significantly warmer than last year, which was around average temperatures.

"Right through the weekend we're looking at really warm temperatures as we have a ridge of high pressure in place. Typically this time of year we see a daytime high around 15 °C and an overnight low of 1 °C so we're sitting about 6-8 degrees higher for this weekend."

The weekend forecast is calling for:

  • Friday: high of 21 °C
  • Saturday: high of 21 °C
  • Sunday: high of 23 °C
  • Monday: high of 25 °C

Fougere explained this warmer than usual weather is coming from a high pressure system that has been sitting over much of Western North America since July! High pressure systems have sinking air, which prevents the formation of clouds and thunderstorms. With this sinking air you can have heat that builds and sticks around for quite some time, as we've been seeing this Fall so far.

While our long weekend is looking amazing, we could see a drastic shift immediately after.

"We're going to see quite a significant change in weather, we do have a low pressure system that is going to move down through the province from the Northwest, and it'll affect the Strathmore area Monday night to Tuesday morning. So we are expecting showers to develop Monday night and its possible we could even see a few flurries mixed in."

Fortunately, Fougere expects this cold weather to be short lived, as we could see our nice weather return after just one cold day on Tuesday.

"By the time we get into Wednesday, Thursday, we're going to rebound in our temperatures. A ridge of high pressure builds back in, and we'll actually get back to above normal. And looking at the rest of the month, we're expecting for most of the time it's going to be above normal in October."

With our long weekend and the rest of October looking nice weather wise, make sure you go out and enjoy the outdoor activities while you still can!
