The Town of Strathmore is currently enjoying their freedom from the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board and now so is Wheatland County.

In a press release from Reeve of Wheatland County, Amber Link, says, “Wheatland County has been advocating to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for several years to be removed from the Calgary Metropolitan Regional Board (CMRB). Our Council representatives worked collaboratively with municipal colleagues, as a member of the CMRB, since its inception. Once all studies and reports were finalized it was clear Wheatland County did not belong in the CMRB.”

The CMRB is a provincially mandated growth management board in the Calgary region. Wheatland County have been clear that their distance from Calgary, their relatively small populations, and the costs associated with membership make their continued participation less practical than for other members of the CMRB.

“The intent of the CMRB was to manage growth, regionally. Wheatland County has an approved plan, The West Highway 1 Area Structure Plan (WH1ASP), that encompasses most of the portion of the County that was in the CMR that provides for effective development processing, engineering, landscaping, environmental, and economic considerations,” Link continued.

The remaining CMRB members are Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere, Okotoks, High River, Cochrane, Foothills County, and Rocky View County.
