The South Central Alberta Hockey League’s Wheatland Warriors won the SCAHL South Championships over the weekend.

They won all five games over the weekend. They won 7-0 against Foothills, 5-1 against Taber, 6-1 against Okotoks, and defeated Okotoks again in the semi-finals 7-1. In the final they took down Medicine Hat with a final score of 4-1.

According to Cody Brown, head coach for the Warriors, the championship went very well. “The boys came to play, and strung together five solid games, and ended up getting the results we were looking for.”

Brown said, they stuck to their game plan. He said, “We have a lot of real good players on our team for sure. We are just as good as everyone else, if we are not working hard. We wanted to make sure we went in there with no preconceptions thinking it was going to be easy.”

He said, the team is definitely excited, as not every player gets a special moment in their career like this. Brown said, “It’s definitely a special moment, you definitely cherish it.”

Brown is very proud of the team. He said, “They deserve the results they got, they put the work in. They stuck to it, they didn’t get too high, or too low. Just kept plugging away.”

The team will now be playing in the SCAHL Championships. They will be playing a three-game series against the winners of the north championship, West Central. The first game is set to be on March 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre. The second game will be on March 9 at 7 p.m. in Sylvan Lake. If a third game is necessary, it will be played on March 10 at 2:45 p.m. in Strathmore.
