Rosebud Theatre is performing the timeless classic The Sound of Music, and 10-year-old Penny Wiley is one of several Strathmore locals taking the stage. She's playing Marta, one of seven Von Trapp children, who is the second youngest child in the play.

Despite her young age, Wiley already has three years of performing experience and said she loves singing and music. Saying it's fun and "like a holiday in my head," Wiley enjoys being on stage and putting on a show, especially when it's one as famous as The Sound of Music.

It takes an incredible amount of dedication to be on stage for a production as big as The Sound of Music, and Wiley said in the month leading up to the first show they practiced two hours each day, with 10-hour days on Sundays. In the final week, they practiced for 10 hours a day. The incredible amount of practicing is worth it for Wiley though, as she's committed to being the best she can be.

"I want to be good in my performances and I know it's not going to go on forever... I just like practicing, sometimes it gets really boring, but I keep trying."

Once she gets on stage she said it can be a bit scary performing in front of 232 people (Rosebud Theatre's capacity), but the crowd's energy helps her feel more comfortable to fully enjoy the performance.

"When they cheer me on, I actually feel like 'I can do this,' because at the start of my plays, I'm always freaking out, feeling nervous, but once I get on, I feel less nervous and more excited."

Wiley is joined by several other community members, including:

  • Abby Taylor playing Louisa Von Trapp
  • Ella Taylor playing Brigitta Von Trapp
  • Rebekah Taylor playing Gretl Von Trapp
  • Danai Allan playing a Nun
  • Terrah Harper-Pianist

The show runs from June 2nd - September 2nd and you can purchase your buffet and show tickets here.
