Alberta's Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Devin Dreeshen, welcomed farmers to the Legislature in Edmonton for a BBQ to show his support for producers taking the brunt of recent trade disputes.

On Wednesday, July 3, Dreeshen was joined by legislature staff and MLA's from all parties, including Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, to encourage Albertans to stand with their producers.

“Alberta has a well-earned reputation for making high-quality food, thanks to the hard work of our farmers," Dreeshen said. "We’re proud of Alberta farmers. Alberta farmers are caught in the crossfire of a bunch of international fights that have nothing to do with them. Everyone can do their part and help our farmers by buying Albertan. When you are out for dinner, ask the restaurant if they are serving Alberta beef, pork, and grains.”

The Government is urging Albertans to spread the message of purchasing food grown in the province by using the hashtag #BuyAlbertan on social media, as they continue to work with the federal government and industry to open markets for producers.

Industry representatives were in attendance on behalf of Alberta Canola, Alberta Pork, Alberta Cattle Feeders, and Alberta Beef Producers.

Alberta Beef Producers Government Relations and Policy manager, Tom Lynch-Staunton, says Alberta beef's great reputation in Canada and internationally can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of producers.

"We're glad to see the Alberta Government stand with our ranchers," Lynch-Staunton said. "We'll continue to work with them and our industry partners to resolve the current market access issues."

Alberta Canola General Manager, Ward Toma, says their Commission is appreciative of the support from MLAs in keeping awareness of the issue alive.

Alberta is Canada's third-largest exporter of agri-food products.
