Federal Agriculture Minister, Marie-Claude Bibeau, met with representatives from the beef and pork industries on Wednesday, July 3.

China's ban on Canadian meat was the main topic of discussion.

Bibeau says it's too early to talk about compensation for producers, adding the government's first priority is to reopen the Chinese market.

“We are working closely with farmers, industry, provinces, and exporters to restore market access to China as quickly as possible. We know that Canada’s food safety system is recognized as one of the best in the world and we will continue to stand up for Canada’s entire agricultural sector.”

She emphasized that's it's only the export system for meat to China that has been impacted by the discovery of a number of forged export certificates.
