On Thursday August 30, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced the province would pull out of the federal climate plan in reaction to the Federal Court of Appeal’s ruling on the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project.

Trans Mountain Pipeline was created in 1953. The newest expansion would move oil from the Edmonton region to Burnaby, B.C. The pipeline is meant to carry oil through North America to the west coast. Trans Mountain Pipeline’s expansion was originally approved by the Government of Canada in November 2016.

Upgrades would change the current pipeline that carries about 300,000 barrels of oil a day, into a pipeline that could carry about 892,000 barrels a day.

“For generations, Alberta has been forced to sell our resources to one customer – the United States – and to sell those resources at a major discount. The oil and gas in our ground is owned by each and every Albertan. When we are forced to sell those resources for less than they are worth, the whole country pays a price,” said Premier Notley.

“This morning, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled against the Trans Mountain Pipeline, quashing the decision to approve the pipeline. This ruling is bad for working families. And it is bad for the economic security of our country,” she said.

“Albertans are angry. I'm angry,” said the Alberta Premier.

“As a result, our ability to transport our most profitable commodity is subject to the whims of the White House and the U.S. government,” she said.

“And let’s be clear – without Alberta, that plan isn’t worth the paper it’s written on,” she said.

The Premiere called on the Federal Government to launch an appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada, then call an emergency session of Parliament and fix the National Energy Board process as it relates to Trans Mountain Pipeline.

“We cannot accept – no one in Canada should accept – that the only way to sell Canada’s resources is through the U.S. No other country on earth would accept this and Canada shouldn’t either, especially when we are doing it to ourselves. It is ridiculous,” Notley said.
