Crowther Memorial Junior High held its Social Dance Contest on Friday (December 23), this event teacher Earl Sorensen explained is a long standing tradition at the school, and they are thrilled to bring this back after a two-year hiatus due to Covid.  

"During the month of December, all of our students in grades 7 to 9 devote our daily Phys. Ed. classes to dance.  We teach them the Jive, Two Step, Waltz, and Foxtrot."

During the afternoon of the last day of school, an event is held to celebrate what the students have learned and to show off their new skills.

"Students dance by grade as our judges observe and select the top dancers.  We award medals of excellence for each dance style for each grade.  This year we will also be awarding two students with the Anne Paskevich Champions of Social Dance Award."

Sorenson explained that Anne Paskevich was a teacher at CMJHS and retired in 2019, she had spent her career teaching Phys. Ed. and was for the majority of her teaching working in Strathmore schools.

"She was instrumental in developing and promoting social dance for students.  It was a true passion for her.  Sadly, she passed away this past June.  In honor of her and her remarkable contributions we have started this "Champions" award as an annual award in her name," noted Sorensen

This year's recipients of the Anne Paskevich Champions of Social Dance Award were Kennedy Jensen and Spencer Johansen.
