A Conservative M.P. who doubles as a Central Alberta farmer believes Canada needs to fight back.

Earl Dreeshen, who represents the Red Deer-Mountain View riding, says farmers are facing the consequences of the Liberal Government's inaction on trade issues with countries like Italy, Saudi Arabia, and most recently China who continues to block Canadian canola shipments.

"Other countries look at us and say, 'Hey, we can attack these guys because there's going to be no consequences,' and that's quite frankly what China has done."

Dreeshen says the Liberal Government has proven they're prepared to leave Canada without an Ambassador to China and have failed to file a trade complaint against China through the World Trade Organization.

He adds, Canada is now being excluded from trade talks between China and the U.S. after once being viewed as an intermediary.

"If China really wanted to find out what was happening and being able to be part of the North American market, they kind of talked to us and we would be talking to the Americans, and vice-versa. The Americans knew we had a good relationship with China," he said. "Right now we're just like a mosquito to both of them, they have no interest in dealing with us."

Dreeshen says the Liberal Government needs to approach China from a position of strength in trade talks.
