Councillor Wegener's Charity Challenge is back for the third time with the proceeds going towards the Wheatland and Area Hospice Society (WAHS).

Strathmore Town Councillor Richard Wegener has committed to matching all donations up to $1000.

"Every year since I've been on Council, I have picked a different charity to donate to. I've been very fortunate in my life so I figured I'd give back to the community. This year I've chosen the Wheatland and Hospice Society, which is something that's kind of important for me," said Councillor Wegener.

Wegener's mom passed away a while ago, so this cause is near and dear to his heart.

"She (Wegener's mom) was in palliative care at the hospital, and they did a great job, but Hospice would have been better, like a better route to go less and less institutional."

According to Wegener, he is passionate about giving back to these programs because he has been very fortunate in his life.

"I've never needed any of these social programs in the past and I know there's a lot of people in town that use them, and I just figured working and then being on council, that it's a platform that I could use to draw awareness and attention to these organizations and a way to a way to give back to the community that's been so good to me."

The challenge will run from April 1 to May 5 with its finale at the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society's Hike for Hospice and Fire Truck Pull event.

"Your support for this meaningful cause is invaluable, as the WAHS provides critical end-of-life care to residents of Wheatland and their families," Councillor Wegener said in a statement.

To donate to the cause, visit the Wheatland Hospice website and then once you have donated you can either text 403-325-5080 or email Councillor Wegener at rwegener@telus.net to let him know that you have donated to the Charity Challange.

"I would appreciate it if you would share the GoFundMe with your friends and families too, as we can all benefit from WAHS's incredible project. Thank you for your generosity and support."
