An inmate has died at the Drumheller Institution.

On February 26, around 5 p.m., RCMP received a call of a medical emergency at the Drumheller Institution.

An investigation revealed that there was an altercation, and one inmate suffered serious injuries. He was then transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

34-year-old inmate Abdirahman Mahamed died while in custody at the medium-security Drumheller Institution.

At the time of his death, Mahamed had been serving a 3-year and 4-month sentence since May 5, 2023, for possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition.

Mahamed's family has been notified.

Cases involving the death of an inmate are reviewed by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

CSC policy requires that the police and coroner be notified.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes is now investigating.
