February is Heart Month, and the Town of Strathmore is encouraging all to participate.

Last February, people who used the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre walking track logged 2,044 km during Heart Month.

That is only 16 kilometers short of Strathmore to Las Vegas.

The Town is encouraging citizens to try and break last year's record and make it to Las Vegas this time.

Heart Month provides people with an opportunity to learn about heart disease and the efforts that can be made to improve overall heart health.

According to the Government of Canada's website, heart disease is currently one of the leading causes of death in Canada, second only to cancer.

“Approximately 2.6 million Canadian adults aged 20 and older live with ischemic heart disease (IHD), the most common type of heart disease,” stated the Government of Canada.

Even though advances in research, drug therapies, and prevention have caused a decline in the rates of heart disease, there are still many risk factors that contribute to it.

There are many small and big lifestyle changes you can make to help reduce your risk of heart disease, such as eating healthier, getting proper sleep, staying physically active, reducing stress, and limiting alcohol intake.

If you want to participate in Heart Month in the Town of Strathmore, you can log your kilometers at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre or the Aquatic Centre.
