As the weather starts to warm up and yards begin to thaw, many are doing their annual spring cleaning. Strathmore’s Compost green cart program is ramping up to start as well on May 1.

Communications Manager from the Town of Strathmore, Geoff Person, explained that this program has been very successful for the town.

“The green cart program was started in 2018 and we’re very proud of the results. Over 3,400 tonnes of material has been kept out of landfills and residents have been able to get free, quality compost through the program.”

The compost program allows residents to dispose of leftover produce, dry grains, florals, dairy meat and soiled paper goods like napkins, tissues, and paper bags.

“Diverting waste from landfills helps to reduce the costs borne by the Town,” explained Person. “Taking part in the green cart program is a smart way to help the Town reduce our waste services costs.”

When asked what something that residents might not know about the green cart program is, Person responded, “Compost is a valuable addition to your yard and it’s free for our residents. What a great win for the community – less garbage in landfills, lower costs for the Town, and free compost for residents. That’s a triple win!”
