A little bit goes a long way in terms of donations for a food bank. Today, through a partnership between the Strathmore Musical Arts Society and the Town of Strathmore, $1,500 was donated to the Wheatland County Food Bank.

Strathmore Musical Arts Society’s Linda Storkson says “Our focus is to help the community any way we can through the use of music.” She explained that back in March 2020, the society decided to create a video with four different artists/groups – Locals, Lewis and Royal, Over The Moon, and the Blake Reid Band.

“We wanted to lift the spirits of Strathmore. We thought we could do a drive-in concert, but with the rules in place, it didn't go,” she said.

Instead, the Strathmore Musical Arts Society and the town got together at two of the Farm and Flea markets and over three lunchtimes to make videos, and in exchange for the use of the Musical Arts Society’s video, the town contributed $1,500 to the food bank.

Storkson said it was a great example of working together to do what they can to help the community.

When asked why they felt it important to support the food bank, Storkson said, “There are lot of people that are hurting right now that really need the food bank.”

There are more plans for live music on the horizon with events being hosted by the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. For their concert on November 6, they plan to host a 50-50 ticket draw.

“We're going to contribute our portion of the 50-50 to the Hospice,” explained Storkson.

She noted that in September the group had planned to host a concert, “Due to unforeseeable things we didn't get our go-ahead until it was too late, therefore we're going to do it in February,” she said. The event will feature the Two Bit Bandits.

“We are going to contribute the $30 fee for the meal because the music is free.” She says they plan to host it similar to concerts held during Alberta Culture Days. The funds from the fee will be donated to the Strathmore Overnight Shelter.
