There is a sugar shortage across Western Canada.

The shortage is due to a labour strike at the Rogers Sugar Refinery in Vancouver on September 28, with 138 workers walking off the job.

As of Friday (Dec. 1), Walmart, No Frills and, Sobey's in Strathmore had sufficient stock. Co-op was limiting access to one bag per customer.

According to the Canadian Sugar Institute, Canada produces approximately 1.2 million tonnes of refined sugar annually and the bulk of the sugar comes from Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
