The Strathmore Huskers Cornhole league has finished its first season on a high.   The President of Strathmore Cornhole Club Lance Smith says that the turnout was better than he expected, especially for the first season. Smith also describes some of the highlights that he had during the last 10 weeks.

“Last night when we had an airmail pipe. We let people throw and nobody was able to hit it all year. We had 62 people there and we were letting people shoot and the whole room was invested. There were a lot of close calls that would get reactions out of people.”

Smith said that the first night was also one of his favorite nights because they didn’t know how many people were going to show up.

“We didn’t know if anyone was going to show up at all and then 55 people walked in. That was pretty cool. Then we hit our high mark of 65 people!”

The response from the community has been nothing but great but as Smith says with any new league there are always going to be growing pains.

“We think that we minimized most of those (growing pains) and we were trying to plan ahead and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. Everyone walked in and out with a smile on their face all year. As far as we know, everybody was happy with it.”

Every week that someone was playing in the league they could have walked away with cash prizes. Since there were two people on a team, they each got a cut of the money. First place was $60, second place was $40, and third place was $20 each.

“We are able to upgrade, we need tablets for every board so we can keep score. We want to buy house bags so that all our bags are the same on every set of boards. So, we can do all this and still have decent cash payouts as well.”

Smith explains that he has made sure to form good relationships with other clubs that are close by and some that are far away.

“The last two weeks we have had a gentleman for Medicine Hat come down and see how our league was run because he wants to start one himself and he was very impressed. He was able to take some good information back home with him. We have also had a lot of guys from Calgary come out throughout the course of the season and some of us are going on Thursday to play in their league.”

Smith expresses that anybody can play, all you have to do is come out a few times and you will see drastic improvement. It's like anything you do it enough and you will be better at it.

The League is starting up April 4th for their next season and because there has been so much interest in the community there is a regional tournament booked for June 17. The tournament will be with all other clubs in Alberta and Saskatchewan. If you would like to play for the full 10 weeks, it is $100 but if you would just like to drop in it's $15.
