Semi trucks, vans, and cars were all traveling together yesterday as part of the Freedom Convoy 2022. This convoy is against vaccine mandates, and many in Strathmore showed up to cheer as it went by.

MLA for Chestermere-Strathmore, Leela Sharon Aheer, said that peaceful protests like these are imperative to the government.

“Well, first of all, the right to peaceful protest is one of the pillars of democracy. I think it's brilliant that people are this motivated and have a reason to put their voices to it,” she commented when asked about the protest.

Aheer explained that she understands the frustration that is driving these trucks towards Ottawa.

“I think one of the biggest issues we had is that the federal government just went back and forth, and back and forth.”

“To be fair, the United States had different protocols than we did. So, for example, even if they've lifted all their protocols regardless of vaccination status, there would still be more hurdles to jump through.”

Aheer said that she hopes that the Freedom Convoy 2022 remains peaceful and their voices are heard by Parliament Hill.

“I think that the whole situation is the best thing that can happen when people are that angry and that upset, that they are able to protest in this manner and to be able to have a voice. It is one of the most important things we can do.”

“I still, however, believe that we have to be careful about our hospitals. For me, a vaccine is a beautiful option and I am grateful to have it, but I’m not ever going to be okay with vaccine mandates. It has never been a part of what I believe or how I feel. I think that autonomy over your body is one of the most precious things that we have.”
