AgSafe Alberta has a new call line open to help farm employers through the process of reporting workplace incidents.

Executive Director of AgSafe Alberta, Jody Wacowich, says their employees act as a third party to help farmers and ranchers navigate Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) process, and act as a "translator" of the departments' lingo.

Wacowich says reporting accidents to OHS is just for farms with paid non-family workers.

"If there's an incident on their farm that OHS is coming out to investigate, they can give us a call and we can provide them some information to help them understand what OHS is asking for, or what they're doing, or have done."

She says it's important for producers to note the line is voluntary, and all information is confidential.

"You're going to have that conversation with us, but we're not going to share it with Government, or anybody else. We certainly may direct you to report it, and say you need to talk to these bodies when you're going through this process."

She says accidents must be reported as soon as possible if they result in a fatality, a worker being admitted to hospital, an unplanned or uncontrolled explosion, fire or flood causing or having the potential to cause a serious incident, the collapse or upset of a crane, derrick or hoist, or if the accident involves the collapse or failure of any component of a building or structure.

The hotline number is 1-833-9AG-SAFE, or you can find more details on their website.
