Earlier this week, Canada became one of the first six countries to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

That gives us first-movers advantage.

Rick Bergmann is the chair of the Canadian Pork Council.

"It brings stability to our marketplace," he said. "It gives opportunity for existing producers, and even those younger generations to look at the sector that we're in and see that it's a solid sector to be part of because of the many opportunities in trade that we have."

Bergmann says they expect exports to Japan to increase by 36 per cent as a result of the CPTPP.

Now that Austrailia has become the sixth country to ratify the agreement, the trade deal will come into effect Sunday, December 30.
